In a 500 mL round bottom flask with a reflux condenser, trityl chloride (25.0 g, 89.7 mmol, 1.00 equiv.) and aniline (21.7 g, 21.3 mL, 233 mmol, 2.60 equiv.) were stirred for 15 minutes at 200 °C. The reaction mixture was cooled down to 21 °C. A mixture of 200 mL 2 M HCl and 300 mL ethanol was added to the solid and the reaction mixture was heated to 80 °C for 30 minutes. After the mixture was cooled down to 0 °C, the resulting solid was filtered, washed with 150 mL ethanol and dried under vacuum to give 4-tritylaniline hydrochloride (23.0 g, 61.8 mmol, 69% yield) as a pale purple powder.
