Molecular bromine (19.2 g, 6.16 mL, 120 mmol, 8.00 equiv) was added to a solution of 1,2,2-triphenylethenylbenzene (5.00 g, 15.0 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in 14 mL of glacial acetic acid and 30 mL of methylene chloride at 0 °C. Then the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 h, and then poured into 100 mL ice water, and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic phase was washed with hydrogensulfite, water and brine, dried over MgSO4, and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure.
