Under an argon atmosphere, to a mixture of tritylbenzene (3.20 g, 9.99 mmol, 1.00 equiv) and acetyl chloride (4.40 g, 4.00 mL, 54.9 mmol, 5.50 equiv) in 50 mL of methanedithione, aluminum trichloride (6.70 g, 50.2 mmol, 5.03 equiv) was added and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 18 h. After cooling to 21 °C, the supernatant was decanted from the formed solid and the solid was mixed with 100 g of ice water, 50 mL of conc. HCl, and 350 mL of methylene chloride. This mixture was stirred until the solid was completely dissolved.The organic phase was separated, washed with NaOH (10%), water, saturated NaCl solution, dried over Na2SO4 and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure.
