To Tetrakis(4-(trimethylsilylethynyl)phenyl)methane (2.00 g, 2.84 mmol, 1.00 equiv) dissolved in THF (75 mL) and methanol (75.0 mL), potassium;hydroxide (796 mg, 14.2 mL, 14.2 mmol, 1.00 M, 5.00 equiv) solution was added. The reaction mixture was stirred for 16 h at 21 °C and then diluted with 60 mL of chloroform. The phases were separated, the aqueous phase extracted with dichloromethane, and the organic phase was washed with water and saturated NaCl solution and dried over anhydrous Na2SO4. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to obtain tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)methane (973 mg, 2.34 mmol, 82% yield) as an light yellow powder.
