4-Bromo-2,6-diisopropylpyridine 1-oxide (628 mg, 2.43 mmol, 1.00 equiv) was dissolved under nitrogen atmosphere in dry methylene chloride (10.0 mL) and tribromophosphane (856 mg, 297 μL, 3.16 mmol, 1.30 equiv) was slowly added at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 3 hours at 21 °C. For work-up the reaction mixture was added to ice water and the mixture was neutralized with 15% aqueous NaOH solution. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and the solvent was removed under pressure.
