2-Aminobenzothiazole (395 mg, 2.63 mmol, 1.00 equiv) and 1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde (250 mg, 2.63 mmol, 1.00 equiv) were added to a flask together with 2.5 g of activated molecular sieves 4A and 20 mL of toluene. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 24 hours, then the molecular sieves were filtered off and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The product was treated with 5 mL of pentane to afford a solid that was filtered, washed with 5 mL of cold EtOH and dried in vacuo. The compound (E)-N-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)-1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methanimine (313 mg, 1.31 mmol, 50% yield) was isolated as a greenish yellow powder.
