A mixture of 3-(Octyloxy)quinoxaline-2-carbaldehyde (630 mg, 2.20 mmol, 1.00 equiv), [(3-methylquinoxalin-2-yl)methyl]triphenylphosphonium bromide (1.21 g, 2.42 mmol, 1.10 equiv) and sodium methoxide (594 mg, 11.0 mmol, 5.00 equiv) was put under an argon atmosphere. Then, dry methanol (7.0 mL) and dry methylene chloride (14.0 mL) was added and the reaction was heated to 50 °C for 12 h. Methylene chloride (250 mL) was added. The organic layer was washed with brine (200 mL) and the obtained aqueous layer was extracted successively with methylene chloride (3 x 250 mL). The organic layers were combined, dried over Na2SO4 and filtered. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure.
