(E)-1-(1H-Pyrrol-2-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)methanimine (223 mg, 1.21 mmol, 1.20 equiv) was deprotonated using a stoichiometric amount of tBuOK (136 mg, 1.21 mmol, 1.20 equiv) in 3 mL of dry DCM under Ar atmosphere. The reaction was stirred for four hours, then the mixture was transferred to a solution containing CuCl (100 mg, 1.01 mmol, 1.00 equiv) and triphenylphosphine (530 mg, 2.02 mmol, 2.00 equiv) in 5 mL of dry DCM . The solution rapidly changed color to dark orange and KCl started to precipitate. The reaction was stirred for 18 hours at 20 °C, then the salt was filtered off, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to afford an oil that was treated with 5 mL of pentane. The product was filtered off, washed with 2x5 mL of pentane and dried in vacuo to afford a dark yellow solid (497 mg, 612 μmol, 61% yield).
