Molecular bromine (29.9 g, 9.59 mL, 187 mmol, 12.0 equiv) was added slowly to tetraphenylmethane (5.00 g, 15.6 mmol, 1.00 equiv) with continous stirring. The resulting slurry was stirred at 21 °C for 1 h and then quenched with ethanol (100 mL) which was cooled to -78 °C. The precipated solid was filtered, washed with aqueous NaHSO3 solution, water, cold ethanol and dried at 50 °C under vacuum to gain tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)methane (6.59 g, 10.4 mmol, 66% yield) as a brownish solid.
