To a vial (5.0 mL) containing a stirring bar, tris(4-iodophenyl)amine (99.7 mg, 160 μmol, 1.00 equiv), potassium tert-butoxide (162 mg, 1.44 mmol, 9.00 equiv) and 1,10-phenanthroline (25.9 mg, 144 μmol, 0.900 equiv) were added sequentially. The vial was capped under an argon shower and the septum was punctured with a needle connected to a Schlenk line and the atmosphere cautiously removed by vacuum whilst stirring, then replaced with argon (repeat three times). 1,4-Difluorobenzene (1.46 g, 12.8 mmol, 80.0 equiv) was added to the mixture and the reaction mixture was degassed once more with argon. The vial was then heated at 160 °C for 30 min. After cooling to ambient temperature, the reaction mixture was flushed through a short (3 cm) silica gel plug with ethyl acetate (~150 mL) and the volatiles were removed under reduced pressure.
