To a solution of phthalimide (3.68 g, 25.0 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in DCM (50.0 mL), (3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)magnesium bromide (freshly prepared form 1-bromo-3,5-dimethoxy-benzene (16.3 g, 75.0 mmol, 3.00 equiv) and magnesium (1.82 g, 75.0 mmol, 3.00 equiv)) in anhydrous THF (50.0 mL) was added dropwise at 0 °C. After stirring at 0 °C for 2 h, the reaction mixture was quenched by addition of 80 mL of NH4Cl-solution and poured into a separating funnel. The organic layer was separated and the aqueous layer extracted with DCM (3x 50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried by the addition of Na2SO4 and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure.
