Dimethyl 4,4'-(2,3-dimethylquinoxaline-6,7-diyl)dibenzoate (100 mg, 234 μmol, 1.00 equiv) was dissolved in chloroform (3.00 mL). Then molecular bromine (56.2 mg, 352 μmol, 1.50 equiv) was added and the mixture was heated at 70 °C for 3 h. The reaction was then allowed to reach 21 °C and was quenched with Na2S2O3 saturated solution. Methylene chloride (50 mL) and distilled water (50 mL) were then added. The aqueous phase was extracted 3x with methylene chloride (50 mL) each time. The organic layers were combined, dried over Na2SO4, and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure.
